The Rocky Mount Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was the mother chapter or one of the first alumni chapters in the region. In the beginning the Rocky Mount Chapter extended its membership as faraway as the Elizabeth City area. Some of the brothers lived in other cities outside of Elizabeth City but within close proximity of the city. These brothers lived in various locations such as Ahoskie, Roper, Plymouth, Gatesville, Windsor, and Williamston, N.C. which made it difficult for some of the brothers to travel to meetings in Rocky Mount on a continuous bases.
After much discussion within the Bond, and an increase in fraternity membership in the Elizabeth City area and having a local college; Elizabeth City State University for support, it was decided to establish an alumni chapter of Kappa at Elizabeth City State University. The chapter was chartered July 15, 1970, at Elizabeth City State University as the Epsilon Alpha Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. The meeting location for the chapter was at Hertford Beach, Hertford, N.C. and for years the meetings were held at The Beach House which was owned by the first chapter Polemarch, Dr. Joseph Weaver.
In February of 1985, the Epsilon Alpha Alumni Chapter split and members in the Ahoskie region charted a new chapter. The Epsilon Alpha Alumni Chapter evolved into the properly named Elizabeth City(NC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and continued to function in Elizabeth City until it became inactive in the early 2000s about 2005 or 2006.
The chapter was re-established in the 2009- 2010 fraternal year due to the efforts of James E. Robertson, Jr. and Cecil Perry, who served as the newly re-established chapter Polemarch and Vice Polemarch. They were aided in their efforts by Cornell McBride, Fentress Morris, Alan Harris, Billie J. Reed, A.C. Robinson, Rodney Robinson, Dr. Charles Cherr,; John Kendale, Horace Reid, and Harold Murrill.
Yours in the Bond,
James E. Robertson, Jr.
